The Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū Shrine was erected by Minamoto no Yoritomo (源頼朝) in 1180 after defeating the rival Taira clan in battle. It is dedicated to Hachiman, the God of War and tutelary deity of the Minamoto clan. The shrine was originally constructed in 1063 near Yuigahama and dedicated to the Emperor Ojin, his mother Empress Jingu.

Tsurugaoka Hacgimangu Shrine. Nov 2019. Despite the crowd, our family really enjoyed our visit to this particular shrine. It is situated in a lovely park setting and once you get to the top of the landing of the shrine, the view was quite impressive. The shrine was originally built in 1063 and is the most important Shinto shrine in Kamakura.
